Recommended hardware

When running on a PC, we recommend a computer with at least 800MHz CPU and 256MB of RAM.

About 100MB of hard disk space is required: 75MB for the JRE and about 25 for the software and the data.

Prerequisites

Before you can run the Data Collection Software, you have to install Java JRE (JavaRuntimeEnvironment) from Sun. Please take following steps:

  • Go to Java download page. You may wish to open it in new window: right click on the link and choose "open link in new window".
  • Locate the link to the JRE (Java Runtime Environment), which should look like "Download JRE 5.0 Update 2". Accept the license by clicking on "Accept" and then on "Continue".
  • Choose the platform (system) that you use. If you use Windows, then the right one will look like: "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p.exe, 15.25 MB)"
  • Download the installation file to your computer
  • Install the JRE on your computer by running the installation file

Note: you need about 75MB of the disk space to install the JRE.

Licensing

The Data Collection Software is Free Software and it's licensed under terms of the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL). By downloading and running it, you agree to use the Data Collection Software under the terms of GNU GPL.

Versions

The current line of software has major number of 7. It is a complete rewrite in Java^tm^ technology. The file naming convention will be: "DataCollectionSoftware-7.x.jar", where "x" stands for the minor versions. So, the consecutive versions of the software will have names of "DataCollectionSoftware-7.0.jar", "DataCollectionSoftware-7.1.jar", "DataCollectionSoftware-7.2.jar" and so on.

Platforms

Supported platforms are: Windows, Linux and Solaris.

There is a problem with running the Software under Mac OS. The cloudscape, local database engine is not supported on Mac OS X. It's probably possible to run the DataCollectionSoftware on Mac OS X, using the network installation.

Technical Support

About the technical issues, please write to the Software development team

What's New

Current, 7.x version is a complete rewrite of the previous version, called "echdd6". Version 7.x is written in Java. Unlike echdd6, the new version can be run not only on Windows, but also on different platforms as GNU/Linux and Solaris. It should run on any platform that can run the Java VM (Java virtual machine). See also Supported platforms.

The user's interface was completely redesigned. In the previous version of the software, the user interface was focusing on tables. In the 7.x version the user interface is reflecting the logical structure of the data. The central concept of the data is the patient, and this can be seen in the interface: the list of patients is the place where you begin to browse the data.

The internals were redesigned. The database structure was normalized, and it also reflects the logical structure of the data, where patients have admissions, there are operations during admissions, and during every operation a number of procedures can be performed.

The Data export was redesigned. The data is exported in the modern and portable XML format, which can be read and understood by both human beings and computers. The structure of XML data also reflects the logical structure of the data.

Please note: as the software is under continuous development, some new english text is introduced in every software release. You can notice that some of the text in the application is not translated, especially the newly added. In such a case, the translation needs to be updated.
